BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN ANTONIO CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio is celebrating a huge milestone in 2014 – 75 years of saving and changing the lives of children and teens by preparing and inspiring them to achieve GREAT FUTURES.

 

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio is a leader in youth development now and has been for the past 75 years. We have positively influenced hundreds of thousands of young lives, preparing kids and teens for great futures.  We provide opportunity to the kids who need us most, helping them to live healthy lifestyles, achieve academically and give back.  By helping youth discover and develop their potential, we are also strengthening communities in and around our city, making them safer, healthier and more productive places to live and work.

Fun Facts

 

• Original location was on 712 Dolorosa Street and was called the Boys Club of San Antonio
• In 1963, Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez presented then President John F. Kennedy with a  gavel and handmade box created by members of the BGCSA woodworking shop
• Girls were first invited to become members in 1976
• Officially changed name to Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio in 1991
• The initial membership fee back in 1939 was $.02 per month. (The equivalent of $50 in today’s dollars – the current fee)
• Original purpose was to serve “pavement boys”
• First onsite after school location was in Edgewood ISD in 2006
• Early fundraiser included a bet and prize was a horse ride through the Menger Hotel
• Partnered with SAISD in 2007 for onsite afterschool programs
• Embarked AYPYN in 2011 in all Judson ISD middle and high schools
• City of San Antonio built two flagship sites for the Boys & Girls Clubs in 1974, one on the east side on MLK, and one in the city’s west side on 19th street.

 

Kick-Off honored past leadership and began national Boys & Girls Clubs Week

 

2014 marks the 75th Anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio. The organization has provided opportunities for the youth of San Antonio to become productive and responsible citizens since 1939 and will start its yearlong celebration with Boys & Girls Clubs Week on March 24th.

 

The week kicked off with a celebration honoring leadership with past CEO’s and board members in attendance. Boys & Girls Clubs members performed and a proclamation was presented to the San Antonio Youth of the Year.
