BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN ANTONIO BREAKS GROUND ON THE MAYS FAMILY CLUBHOUSE

(SAN ANTONIO, TX) – The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio celebrated the groundbreaking of the Mays Family Clubhouse, its seventh clubhouse in San Antonio, located at 829 Nogalitos in the Lone Star neighborhood. The $4.8 million branch is funded through the organization’s first comprehensive capital campaign, “Invest in a Child. Build a Great Future.” which aims to raise $10.9 million by the end of 2015. The capital campaign’s honorary co-chairs, Harvey E. Najim and Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich, hosted the event that also featured remarks by San Antonio District 5 City Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio CEO Angie Mock, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio Chairman Luis de la Torre, and Kathy Mays Johnson, President of the Mays Family Foundation.

The Mays Family Foundation contributed $2 million toward the cost of the new facility that will serve nearly 650 new club members in 21,000 square feet with a learning center, art studio, teaching kitchen, multimedia centers, teen center, gymnasium, and a game room. It’s located in an underserved area with one of the highest juvenile crime rates in the city. The City of San Antonio also contributed $1.8 million from its 2012 bond program.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio makes such a dramatic difference in the lives of our city’s youth,” said Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales. “The Lone Star Neighborhood is thrilled to celebrate this new state of the art clubhouse. Few organizations achieve these transformational results. I am grateful to the San Antonio voters who supported this 2012 Bond project with funds to build this facility. San Antonio is a city with a big heart; we owe our sincere gratitude to individuals like Harvey Najim, Coach Popovich, and the Mays family for their continued financial and moral support.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio has served the community for over 75 years by providing a safe place where the city’s youth can learn and grow to achieve their full potential through programs including school tutoring, college readiness, sports, nutrition education, and resilience training. The results are compelling: 99% of its members stayed in school and improved their grades; 95% of graduating teen members pursued higher education; and 71% made notable progress in character development. It annually serves nearly 10,000 members, ages 6 – 18 years old, from its six clubhouses and 46 on-site school locations. Membership is open to all youth in San Antonio and annual dues are only $50 per child.

“The primary goal of our foundation is to support children’s charities in San Antonio so that youth in our community are well educated and lead healthier lives,” said Harvey E. Najim. “Few organizations achieve those goals as well as Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio. Their record is outstanding and I’m proud to join Coach Gregg Popovich as Honorary Co-Chairs of their first capital campaign to help them serve more children in San Antonio and move the organization to the next level.”

In addition to the new Mays Family Clubhouse, the organization intends to utilize funds raised through the $10.9 million “Invest in a Child. Build a Great Future.” comprehensive capital campaign to make improvements to three other clubhouses, secure operating funds for several years, and to increase its transportation fleet with additional buses and vans. The capital campaign was launched to coincide with the organization’s 75th anniversary in 2014. Other donors include The Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation and Valero Energy Foundation, which each contributed $1 million.

“We are thrilled to expand our reach in the San Antonio community so even more youth can benefit from our resources,” said Angie Mock, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio CEO. “They say it takes a village, and the Mays Family Clubhouse is a prime example of what an entire community can come together to create with the purpose of giving our youth a place to focus on achieving academic success and building strong character. This is an investment in the youth of today to ensure our community will thrive for many years to come.”

The Kronkosky Charitable Foundation has committed to a generous dollar-for-dollar match (up to $250,000) to directly benefit the capital campaign’s fundraising goal. Boys & Girls Clubs has $600,000 left to raise to meet its $10.9 million goal.
