REP. CASTRO INDUCTED INTO BGCA NATIONAL ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

Congressman Castro Inducted Into Hall of Fame
Boys & Girls Clubs of America Honors Castro in Ceremony This Week

SAN ANTONIO, TX, May 8, 2013 – Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio alumnus Congressman Joaquin Castro was inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Alumni Hall of Fame during the 2013 National Conference this past week.  This annual honor is bestowed upon a select few Club alumni who have achieved success in chosen career fields.

The Hall of Fame had quite a lineup of inductees this year.  In addition to Congressman Joaquin Castro, businessman Harris Rosen, astronaut Winston Scott, paralympian Blake Leeper, Coast Guard Commander Robert L. Smith, pro bowler Kelly Kulick, entertainer Raphael Saadiq and MLB Hall of Famer Frank Robinson were inducted.

Congressman Castro attended the Calderon Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, located in the west side of San Antonio on 19th Street. For his mother, Rosie Castro, the Boys & Girls Clubs was a special place. “As a single mom raising two active boys, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio was a mother’s dream come true. I knew my boys were safe and being influenced by caring adults,” she said.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio serves as a safe haven for more than 8,800 at-risk youth and provides programs focused on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship.

“Induction into the Boys & Girls Clubs Alumni Hall of Fame is the highest honor an alumnus of our organization can receive. These incredible men and women have gone above and beyond for their communities, carrying the lessons and skills they learned while members of the Clubs with them throughout their careers,” said Angie Mock, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio CEO.

Other National Alumni Hall of Fame members residing in San Antonio include The Honorable Judge Nelson Wolff, Major General Alfred A. Valenzuela, and Sean Elliott. Nationally, Congressman Castro joins the ranks alongside Denzel Washington, Jennifer Lopez, Jim Collins, and the Honorable Antonio Villaraigosa, to name a few.
